O'Neil auditioned for Season 3 of Canadian Idol in the early year of 2005, while in high school. She was able to make it into the top 100 rounds when judges applauded her singing ability. O'Neil was praised highly by judges, but she suffered significant losses in the top 10 weeks as well as the Top 9 of the Finals as she fell to the lowest 3 and 2 spots in both cases. The judges were awed at her performance and recommended viewers to select contestants who sang well, such as Melissa. O'Neil's performances were consistently good, that he didn't fall in the third place. The judge Werner said, following another two incredible performances, that O'Neil would win of the Canadian Idol competition, as well as the first woman and youngest ever to win the show in the wake of the September 7 finals in 2005. O'Neil's Canadian Idol victory was officially announced by President Paul Martin immediately.
