O'Grady has the father of Jim O'Grady and Jan O'Grady. Jim O'Grady works as a financial advisor. The family was raised by her parents in Wheaton (Illinois) where she graduated in 1981 from Wheaton's North High School. In commercials, she appeared prior to her move from Illinois' Wheaton to Los Angeles. O'Grady started her career by modeling for Montgomery Ward and making commercials. She had her debut on the big screen in the 1988 romantic comedy she's Having a Baby, and later was cast in recurring character on ABC Drama China Beach opposite Dana Delany. She has also guest starred as a guest on independent films as well as television series. Donna Abandando, her first significant role in the ABC police drama NYPD Blue was her character. O'Grady was the big-haired secretary from 1993 until 1996 was among the Emmy Award nominees each year for Outstanding Drama Series Supporting Actress. She won the Screen Actors Guild Award in 1995 for outstanding performances by an ensemble of actors in the drama series.
